Reformer Pilates: understand the machine and the practice

Learn how the carriage, springs and straps work, and find your starting point at Corpoz in Paris 11.
By Corpoz StudioUpdated on

Reformer Pilates uses a machine with a moving carriage, springs and straps. An instructor combines these elements to guide movement and control. Spring resistance can support a movement or make it more demanding, so adding springs does not always make an exercise harder.

What do the parts of a Reformer do?

The carriage

The platform slides during some exercises. Learning to guide its movement and return is part of getting familiar with the machine.

The springs

They change the resistance and support of the carriage. Settings depend on the exercise and the person. Follow your instructor's direction rather than copying the person beside you.

The footbar and straps

These provide different points of contact and ways to move. Set them up as directed, keeping your hands away from moving mechanisms.

Do you need to be athletic to start?

Corpoz welcomes beginners in classes suited to their level. Your starting point is understanding the instructions, rather than performing the most advanced variation. Check the class description and ask the studio if you are unsure which intensity to choose.

A private session gives you more time for individual questions. A group class lets you learn within a shared sequence. Neither format requires you to know every exercise name before arriving.

How does it differ from mat Pilates?

A Reformer introduces a moving support and adjustable resistance. Mat Pilates uses body weight and may include accessories. Neither format is automatically easier: exercise selection and instruction matter. See our comparison with mat Pilates, yoga and strength training for the practical differences.
