Reformer, mat Pilates, yoga or strength training: how to choose

Compare equipment, class structure and instruction to find a practice that fits your goal without a universal ranking.
By Corpoz StudioUpdated on

Choose Reformer Pilates if you want to explore adjustable resistance and a moving carriage in an instructed class. Mat Pilates needs less equipment, yoga varies with the style taught, and strength training offers different ways to work with loads. Your goal, budget and willingness to return regularly matter more than a universal ranking.

Practical differences

PracticeTypical equipmentWhat to ask before booking
ReformerCarriage, springs, footbar and strapsWhat level and intensity is this class?
Mat PilatesMat, sometimes accessoriesAre beginner variations available?
YogaMat, sometimes blocks or strapsWhat style and pace are taught?
Strength trainingWeights, machines or body weightWho helps with load selection and technique?

Is mat Pilates harder than Reformer?

Not automatically. Some mat exercises require you to control body weight without assistance. Reformer springs can either support an action or add resistance. Exercise selection and available variations determine much of the difficulty.

You want to learn a machine

A beginner-suitable Reformer class lets you learn settings with an instructor. Ask about the pace before booking your first session.

You want a practice with little equipment

Mat Pilates may be easier to arrange outside a studio. Check the class level, accessories and cost with the provider.

Do you have to choose between yoga and Pilates?

You might enjoy a yoga style for its sequences, or the Reformer for working with the carriage. Fast-paced and quieter yoga classes differ considerably. Look at the session itself rather than drawing conclusions from its name.

Can you combine Reformer and strength training?

Yes, with a schedule that fits your recovery and other activities. If your priority is progression on a specific lift, consider how your strength programme is organised. If you want to learn the Reformer, start by getting familiar with the machine. Adding another activity does not require every session to be harder.

Is one method better for back pain?

The 2015 Cochrane low-back-pain review did not establish Pilates as superior to other exercise. That evidence cannot identify a universal winner. If you have pain, seek advice on activity appropriate to your situation.
