Reformer exercises: understand the names and instructions

A class vocabulary guide to Footwork, Hundred and Long stretch, with questions to ask your instructor.
By Corpoz StudioUpdated on

Footwork, Hundred and Long stretch are exercise names you may encounter in Reformer Pilates. A name alone does not specify the spring setting or the variation suitable for you. This guide helps you follow class vocabulary; it is not a programme to reproduce independently on a machine.

Useful references during a class

Footwork

Footwork illustration

This describes a family of movements with the feet supported and the carriage moving. Ask: which foot position and range does the instructor want for this variation?

Hundred

Hundred illustration

The Hundred traditionally combines arm movement with a breathing rhythm. Leg position and support can vary. Ask: which alternative should you use if the proposed variation does not suit you?

Long stretch

Long stretch illustration

This family combines hand support and carriage control, often in a plank-like position. Ask: how can you learn the carriage movement before increasing the difficulty?

Names of more demanding variations

Teaser

This name refers to a balancing position involving trunk control. The version taught depends on the class. It is not a position you need to achieve on your first visit.

Snake & twist

These describe complex variations combining support and rotation. Positioning and transitions need guided learning; an illustration cannot explain them on its own.

Star

A demanding variation using lateral support and whole-body control. Its place in a class depends on the instructor's progression, rather than how impressive it looks.

Why is there no universal spring setting?

Machines, exercises and aims differ. Copying a spring colour or number online does not determine the right setting. Ask for instructions before changing the springs or footbar, and do not adjust a mechanism while the carriage is moving.

What if you lose track of the instructions?

Tell the instructor. Ask to revisit a point of contact or start with a simpler variation. Understanding the movement matters more than continuing a sequence you no longer control. Stop an exercise if it causes pain and explain what you feel.
